Beckham hits out at criticism aimed at England's Sterling

Jones, who made just nine worldwide appearances for Wales, believes Sterling relies to heavily on his speed and slammed his finishing so far this World Cup.

Sterling was a key part of the Manchester City side that won the Premier League last season but he has been less effective in England's charge to the last four for the first time since 1990. In John Stones and Harry Maguire, Southgate has two centre-backs with completely different career trajectories, but perhaps, the most fascinating to watch has been Southgate's use of British football media's cursed child, Raheem Sterling.

Speaking to reporters in Moscow a day after his side's dramatic quarter-final win over hosts Russia, Dalic was asked about England's strengths and weaknesses.

And Dier feels Sterling's handling of the whole situation has been nothing short of "incredible", before going on to laud his team-mate's World Cup performances.

Sterling has yet to score in Russian Federation, but has made plenty of menacing runs in the opponents' half and brought others into play.

When I was under Ron Greenwood at West Ham, he would say to turn defenders around.

"He offers so much to the team".

Barnes, who started his career at Watford before moving to Liverpool and also later had a spell with Newcastle, feels the current England players will leave Russian Federation better prepared for the challenges ahead. "Still, he misses simple balls, and he has to be more aggressive in these kinds of things", Guardiola had acknowledged that Sterling is still a work-in-progress but the Manchester City boss had also reflected upon the tenets of his game which Southgate has managed to harness successfully.

Raheem Sterling has been criticised for his performances at the World Cup.

Eric Dier believes there should be no debate about the displays Sterling has put in.

The flak Sterling receives doesn't bother him as much anymore, in his own words, the youngster focussing on his duties instead.

Beckham was not the only former England worldwide to support Sterling following his Sweden showing, with 1966 World Cup victor Sir Geoff Hurst even arguing it was the forward's finest performance of the tournament. Every player deserves to be applauded.
