Liverpool open talks over Stoke City star ahead of £13 million move

Shaqiri was among Switzerland's best players in their run to the last 16 of the World Cup, scoring a late victor in their only victory, against Serbia.

It looks like Liverpool are closing in on their third signing of this transfer window, with Sky Sports and the Liverpool Echo reporting that the Reds have opened talks with Stoke over Swiss midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri.

The 26-year-old winger has a clause in his contract which means he can leave for around £13.5 million if a club pays up.

It is believed Stoke are interested in taking one of Liverpool's youngsters, such as Harry Wilson or Sheyi Ojo, on loan and they hope doing a deal for Shaqiri may help get that over the line.

Liverpool have already bolstered their midfield options this summer with Naby Keita and Fabinho, for £52.75m from Red Bull Leipzig and £43.7m from Monaco respectively, and had lined up a £53m move for Nabil Fekir until a medical raised concerns.

Stoke are open to offers following their relegation from the Premier League, with Shaqiri unlikely to stick around at a Championship club.

His side take on League Two outfit Bury on Saturday before a midweek game against Blackburn Rovers. Liverpool have been trying to reignite a deal despite a hands-off warning issued before the World Cup.

Calls for Liverpool to sign a goalkeeper were intensified after Loris Karius' mistake against Tranmere this week, but the club have made no progress with regards to a move for Alisson Becker, their preferred target.
