Zsa Zsa dies weeks after being dubbed 'World's Ugliest Dog'

The Facebook account for the English bulldog, ran by her owner Megan Brainard, announced the sad news on Tuesday, July 11, with a post that read, "I'm sad to share that ZSA ZSA passed away in her sleep last night".

The canine won the hearts of people with her slobbery tongue, squished-in face and sparkly pink collar. Her hanging tongue and crooked teeth are the product of a pronounced underbite - Brainard told Today that small children often gave Zsa Zsa's tongue a handshake.

Brainard named the sweet, lovable pup after the Hollywood legend Zsa Zsa Gabor, because the pretty pooch enjoyed lounging on the couch "like a handsome model".

"I picked Zsa Zsa up and took her outside and laid her down in the grass", Brainard told Today. She was 9 years old. Despite her dog's appearance, Brainard proudly boasted, "She is so attractive in my eyes".

Zsa Zsa gained worldwide attention after winning the 2018 World's Ugliest Dog contest last month, which was held in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The nine-year-old Zsa Zsa came from a hardscrabble background, spending five years in a puppy mill in the USA state of Missouri and being sold at auction before she attained ugliest dog immortality.

Brainard and Zsa Zsa drove for 30 hours from their home in Anoka, Minn., to compete in the World's Ugliest Dog Contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, Calif. Her owner was awarded $1,500 for Zsa Zsa's win.
