Defending race victor Ricky Stenhouse Jr. started the melee when he tapped and turned Keselowski, who was running third. That crash ended their respective nights.

"Ricky was doing the best he could to give me a good push and had a great run to take the lead, and the auto in front of me (Byron) just threw a late, bad block", Keselowski said. "It usually happens much later in the night".

"When one auto sits sideways in front of the field at 200 miles per hour, you can't get through it", driver Joey Logano said of the mishaps.

Two massive wrecks in Stage 2, both involving Ricky Stenhouse Jr., eliminated the majority of the contending cars and opened the door for a new victor. It was Stenhouse's first stage win of the year. Eight laps later, Byron and Kyle Busch were involved and the caution resulted in Byron losing his spot.

Brad Keselowski won the battle off of pit road and would lead the field at the start of stage 2 in the Coe Zero 400 at Daytona.

"No, it's aggressive speedway racing", Stenhouse said.
