Korea approves rare screening of N. Korea films

The US secretary of state visited Pyongyang on Friday and Saturday in an attempt to agree details of a deal made during June's historic summit between Donald Trump and the North Korean dictator.

Accusations from US politicians, however, have triggered nationalistic sentiment among Chinese netizens.

"Repatriation of USA remains from North Korea will be important not just to American families, but to building trust between the US and North Korea as well", Pompeo said earlier this week.

Byrd, a forensic anthropologist, was part of a 15-strong DPAA team in North Korea 20 years ago.

A spokesman for U.S. Forces Korea referred questions Thursday to the Department of Defense in Washington. The U.S. was also supposed to receive the remains of servicemen killed in the Korean War of the early 1950s. The transfer of remains between North Korea and the United States has not taken place since 2005.

As diplomatic engagement increases contact between the two Koreas and reduces hostility across the border, authorities may be anxious ordinary North Koreans might view the South favorably.

Despite the secretary's attempt to put a positive spin on the visit, as soon as he was out of the country, North Korea criticized his "unilateral and gangster-like" demands and called the talks "regrettable".

Joint U.S. -North Korean military search teams recovered 229 sets of American remains from North Korea between 1996 and 2005.

North Korea's criticism of talks with Pompeo fueled further doubts about whether Trump will ever achieve his goal of "complete denuclearization", much less on the timeline of one to 2-1/2 years set out by various administration officials.

North Korean officials didn't show up for a planned meeting with US counterparts to discuss returning the remains of American war dead, South Korean media reported, in the latest sign of tensions between the two sides.

The last repatriation was in 2007 when then-New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson traveled to Pyongyang and returned with six sets of remains.

North Korean negotiators failed to show up for scheduled talks with the U.S.at Panmunjeom, Thursday, on repatriating the remains of USA soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War, indicating a possible rift between the two countries in ongoing denuclearization talks. "No one not at the table can be sure of what happened-and sometimes even those who were there do not absorb it right away-but it looks as if the two sides have made progress narrowing the gap on how the negotiations would proceed, how to measure progress, and how progress on one front can support progress on the others".

Since the summit in Singapore, there has been increasing scrutiny of the agreement reached by Trump and Kim, with some experts suggesting that North Korea did not really intend to give up its nuclear weapons.
