Celebrities lose followers amid crackdown — Fake Twitter users

However, some of Twitter's biggest users, including Trump, saw huge drops in the numbers of their followers Thursday after the purge, Variety reported.

As of this writing, President Trump had 53.1 million followers, but on July 11, he had 53.4 million, according to the Wayback Machine. From a whopping 62.85 million followers to 55.35 million, Twitter lost 7.5 million (12%) followers in a matter of just a single day. Rahul Gandhi followership tanked after microblogging site Twitter removed around 70 million fake accounts.

"We understand this may be hard for some, but we believe accuracy and transparency make Twitter a more trusted service for public conversation", Vijaya Gadde, Twitter's Legal, Policy and Trust and Safety Head, said in a blog post earlier this week.

Pakistani celebrity Twitter users with massive followers also experienced the same decrease.

While eliminating locked accounts from follower totals will not affect MAU or DAU totals, Twitter's efforts to shut down other kinds of accounts - including those set up by spammers - potentially could, Gadde acknowledged.

"These sudden changes in account behavior could include Tweeting a large volume of unsolicited replies or mentions, Tweeting misleading links, or if a large number of accounts block the account after mentioning them", it further explained.

"Action on this starts today", Twitter's chief executive and co-founder Jack Dorsey tweeted, adding he lost 200,000 followers.

Coming back to the local scene, we have seen some significant drop in follower counts in some accounts.

"Though the most significant changes are happening in the next few days, follower counts may continue to change more regularly as part of our ongoing work to proactively identify and challenge problematic accounts".

If the owner doesn't respond and reset their password, Twitter locks the account.

According to social media analytics service Socialblade, the nine biggest Twitter accounts - Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Barack Obama, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Ellen Degeneres, Christiano Ronaldo and YouTube - all saw drops of more than 2 million followers each.

The number of Modi's followers went down to 43.1 million from 43.4 million.
