Justice Dept reopens investigation into Emmett Till’s lynching murder

The case was closed in 2007 after authorities said that the suspects in question had died, and a state grand jury did not file new charges.

That's the murder of then 14-year-old Emmett Till. In last year's The Blood of Emmett Till, however, it was discovered that Carolyn Donham had lied when she testified that Emmett Till harassed her with "verbal and physical advances" at a store in MS in 1955.

Donham's then-husband Roy Bryant and his half-brother J.W. Milam were charged with Till's murder but were later acquitted by an all-white jury. Both are now dead.

Donham, who turns 84 this month, now lives in North Carolina, AP reported.

TYSON: I think that it's a cynical political charade and utter hypocrisy for the Justice Department of Jeff Beauregard Sessions and Donald Trump to feign caring about a black child murdered in 1955 when they're holding children of color in cages, when they can't find a moral distinction between the Nazis and those who demonstrate against them, when Jeff Sessions has spent his whole career supporting restrictions on voting rights.

The U.S. Department of Justice is reopening the 63-year-old Emmett Till case after acquiring "new information" about the case. The government has investigated 115 cases involving 128 victims under the "cold case" law named for Till, the report said.

Tyson, senior research scholar at the Center for Documentary Studies, published "The Blood of Emmett Till" previous year, shedding new light on the 1955 lynching. Wright said of his cousin Till that he was always joking around, and might have been trying to get a laugh out his cousins, though the whistle terrified Wright. They beat him, tortured him, and threw his body into the Tallahatchie River with the fan of a cotton gin tied to his neck with barbed wire.

Mamie Till, Emmett's mother brought national attention to her son's murder by having an open casket at the funeral showcasing his mangled body. Now his cousin, Wheeler Parker Jr.is speaking out. "So many emotions through the years".

"For every courageous black man willing to speak out against the circumstances we faced", Simeon Wright wrote in his book, according to The New York Times, "hundreds of white men were willing and able to make sure he paid the ultimate price". "And we want to be at the forefront of that movement as well", Watts said. I don't know what's - we don't know. The report's contents weren't widely known until Thursday.

A federal official familiar with the matter told The Associated Press that information in the 2017 book was what led federal investigators to re-examine the case. "Just what did he say when he grabbed your hand?" defense attorney Sidney Carlton asked, according to a trial transcript released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation a decade ago.

Tyson said the Federal Bureau of Investigation interviewed him a year ago, and he turned over all research materials, including a memoir Donham wrote that he said would not be published until after her death. Deliberations barely took an hour, and one juror claimed the acquittal could've come sooner had they not stopped to have a soda.

Moments after pulling away, she said the teenager "caught me at the cash register", grasped her around the waist with both hands and pulled her towards him.

Though a judge ruled Carolyn's testimony inadmissible in court, her husband and Milam were quickly acquitted.

Timothy Tyson said at a news conference Thursday that he was contacted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation several weeks after his book came out in January 2017.
