Serena rolls past Goerges to return to Wimbledon final

Serena rolls past Goerges to return to Wimbledon final

The American didn't drop a set in the entire tournament and Russian 21st seed Zvonareva, playing in her first Grand Slam final, was no match.

Navratilova has been as impressed as anyone watching Williams's Wimbledon return, the American having been absent a year ago as she prepared to give birth to daughter Alexis Olympia.

"This was not inevitable for me", Williams said after the match, which took 70 minutes to complete. "I had a really tough delivery, and I had to have multiple surgeries and nearly didn't make it, to be honest", Williams said.

She was, instead, going to employ spectacular defense and solid, steady play, while letting her opponent, Jelena Ostapenko, be the one to determine the outcomes of almost every point.

Williams will be seeking a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title and her first since giving birth in September.

Her 35th grand slam semi quickly raced to a conclusion as Williams stepped on the gas, Goerges trying to mix things up but failing in her execution.

After tumbling out of the top 10 past year, the German left-hander appears back to the blistering form that carried her to the top ranking and three major finals in 2016, including grand slam triumphs in Melbourne and NY.

"I mean, even this week, I had a pain in my leg, and I went to the worst-case scenario: 'Oh, my God, I have a [pulmonary embolism] in my leg, '" Williams said.

And Wilander believes that clinching an eighth Wimbledon crown would convince her she was capable of winning another four Slams.

Three hundred and fourteen days after becoming a mother, tennis champion Serena Williams earned her spot in the finals at Wimbledon.

"I think she had really many advantages because of that".

"It's no secret I had a super tough delivery".

The American's fiercely competitive streak fuelled her rise from the bullet-riddled courts of Compton in south-central Los Angeles, and she remains as driven as ever.

Williams would not disagree - she said she felt like a "superhero" wearing a black catsuit at the French Open, while the flesh-coloured tights she is wearing here would meet a comic-book heroine's approval.

Kerber had beaten Williams in the Australian Open final in January, but the German couldn't produce another shock.

"Emotionally and mentally no one can beat Serena but will she hold up physically after having a baby?" the six-times Wimbledon champion said moments before taking her seat in Centre Court's Royal Box.

All those questions about her mobility and fitness levels and whether she can beat top-15 opposition were answered swiftly and brutally.

"I know that sounds weird, but I worked out a lot and I worked hard".

"I don't have anything to lose and I feel I can play so free". The German will make her work for every point and will not offer many errors, unlike Serena's previous opponents who were mostly big hitters. But she made fewer errors and played smart tennis, putting the onus and pressure on the first-time semi-finalist.

"I couldn't even walk to my mailbox, so it's definitely not normal to be in a Wimbledon final". Kerber, who lost to Williams in Wimbledon's 2016 final, will have a shot at redemption in what's already been a solid season.

Williams won only two of her first four matches after coming back to the tour in March, struggling with her weight, movement and rhythm.

Not to be denied, Williams broke straight back to love to seal victory and celebrating with her customary twirl after booking her place in a 30th grand slam singles final.

A game built on rugged defense, counter-punching and a tricky leftie serve gives her a chance of throwing Williams off her relentless stride.
