Why Thai cave boys were sedated

Why Thai cave boys were sedated

A problem will arise if they decide to travel to Manchester: the coach, Ekaphol Chantawong, and three of the boys are stateless and need special permission to travel even outside their home province Chiang Rai.

They fought against mother nature to pump out floodwater and divert water flows amid Thailand's wet monsoon season.

Spanish diver Fernando Raigal told the Daily Mail: "The boys were sedated - they were unconscious".

One parent said the boys were actually on higher ground than the small ledge where they were located, but came down when they saw someone coming.

Earlier reports said the boys would be discharged from the hospital on Thursday.

Richard Harris, an anaesthetist and experienced cave diver, was meant to be holidaying in South Australia.

The permanent secretary revealed that the first four boys to be rescued and admitted to hospital on July 8 had returned to generally normal health and had no signs of disease. "Thank you everybody who support us and who send us inspiration".

The head of the rescue mission, Narongsak Osottanakorn, has stated that the world should remember him as the true hero of the 17-day operation.

Images of the children in their hospital gowns with their heads bowed low were released yesterday as British divers involved in the global rescue mission claimed the Thai navy divers were "out of their depth" before their own crucial intervention.

Thai authorities called Harris for help on July 5 when experts divers from the United Kingdom, who were leading the mission, said he was the best person for the job, given his medical skills and 30 years' worth of diving experience, according to the ABC.

He explained local, and British divers who Dr Harris described as "the awesome foursome", had already laid terrific groundwork to ensure the success of the gruelling mission.

The 13-year-old captain of the team, Dom, lost about 9 pounds, his family said.

The teenagers also asked if they could be sent some KFC.

His efforts to help bring the 12 boys and their coach to safety was also marked by personal tragedy, with his father passing away just hours after the mission was completed.

Mental health experts have warned of the long-term effects of being trapped in the dark with no food, especially in the first nine days before they were found by a pair of British divers.

Earlier, Dr Harris thanked all of the worldwide volunteers and Thai rescue workers.

It comes as hundreds call for Harris to be made Australian Of The Year come January 26.

The Thai Navy SEALs issued a statement on July 11 thanking the South Australian for his incredible efforts.

Each of the boys, who range in age from 11 to 16, are shown sitting upright in their hospital beds, appearing healthy in hospital gowns and surgical masks.
