Tyrod Taylor, Baker Mayfield Impress in Browns Debut

His second, though, put on display some of the qualities the Browns - 20-10 winners over the Giants on Thursday - fell for in drafting the former Oklahoma star first overall in April's draft. Four of his carries totaled 4 yards from scrimmage, but the focus should be on his game-opening 39-yard cutback burst through the line and down the right sideline. Then he bounced it outside and gained the edge on flat-footed Browns CB Damarious Randall.

Perhaps a sign of the changing times in Cleveland, top pick Baker Mayfield was the Browns' second competent quarterback of the evening, following starter Tyrod Taylor.

Despite playing just two drives, Tyrod Taylor gave us plenty of good things to talk about. That side of the debate could claim vindication after 2017 third-round pick Davis Webb completed 9-of-22 passes for 70 yards in a dismal performance.

One of Baker's favorite targets throughout the night was fellow rookie Antonio Callaway. Spencer Drago was called for holding, though, setting up third-and-18.

Barkley got two series in the first quarter against the Browns.

It was all so familiar for Sooners fans and novel for Clevelanders. He hauled in a quick slant from Mayfield that he took 54 yards to the end zone to extend the Browns' lead in the second half. He received a ton of work in six series and looked, well, mostly like the big-play magician who won the Heisman trophy a year ago. Taylor will start under center, though not expected to stay in the game long. It may have been the first preseason game, but that doesn't change the fact that at least some of the real gameplan made it into this one.
