USA imposes sanctions on Russian Federation over Skripal poisonings in Salisbury

Wednesday's announcement comes less than a month after a summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki that has sparked concern among both Democrats and Republicans over the president's reluctance to hold the Kremlin to account for interfering in US elections.

The United States will impose sanctions on Russian Federation for its alleged use of a nerve gas agent in an attempt to poison former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in England.

Britain was quite happy with the expulsions back in March, and unsurprisingly was quick to endorse the new U.S. sanctions as a "strong worldwide response to the use of a chemical weapon on the streets of Salisbury".

The Kremlin has vehemently denied any involvement in the Salisbury and Amesbury incidents, and it did so again in lieu of new sanctions.

A State Department official said the sanctions could have a significant impact on trade with Russian Federation.

Russia's embassy in the United States said Washington's findings against it in the Skripal case were not backed by evidence.

The Kremlin acknowledged on Thursday Putin's office had received the letter, but Peskov suggested the Russian leader was yet to parse it.

"The theater of the absurd continues", said Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia's first deputy representative to the United Nations.

It's a benefit, they argue, of policies put in place amid a raft of Western sanctions imposed over Russian actions in Ukraine and alleged interference in the USA 2016 presidential elections.

He added that the U.S. move was "absolutely unfriendly", but reiterated Moscow's hope for improvements to the stressed relations between the two countries.

Washington had become an unpredictable player on the global stage, Peskov added, saying "anything could be expected" from it and that it was important that Russia's financial system, which he described as stable, was prepared.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously denied allegations that Russia was behind the poisonings, saying in March that it was "unthinkable that we would do such a thing". Instead, he said there were also delays in triggering the same type of US sanctions after the two most recent chemical or biological attacks, one in Sryia by the Assad regime and another perpetrated by North Korea.

"If the bill becomes law and Russia retaliates, we estimate that USD/RUB could move to 72.00, while EUR/RUB could hit 83.50, as any major selloff of Russian local debt, local credit and stocks would amplify outflows from the rouble", Danske Bank said in a note.

A photo released by the Russian Foreign Ministry shows U.S. President Donald Trump with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, left, and then Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergei Kislyak in the White House in May 2017.

"This whole accusatory pyramid is being built in the absence of any legal substantiation, but they're still telling us about worldwide law and respect for legal obligations", Zakharova told the Moscow briefing.

President Trump met with Putin at a summit in Helsinki, Finland, in July, and was widely criticized by both Democrats and Republicans alike who accused Mr. Trump of being too conciliatory to Putin.
