Fancy some 'Space Force' merch? Trump team offers up logo options

Pence described space as a domain that was once peaceful and uncontested but has now become crowded and adversarial.

"There is a threat out there but it's being handled by the US Air Force today", he said during an MSNBC interview, according to Reuters.

"When it comes to defending America, it is not enough to merely have an American presence in space", Trump said during a recent National Space Council meeting at the White House. Space is vital to the way the United States wages war; the Pentagon's satellites are used for missile-defense warnings, guiding precision munitions, and providing communications and reconnaissance.

In reality, the administration seems insecure that other countries are beginning to push space research and exploration.

The Pentagon's proposal identifies China and Russian Federation as "strategic competitors" that are "explicitly pursuing space war fighting capabilities to neutralise U.S. space capabilities in a time of conflict".

He added that in 2014, China and Russian Federation had jointly proposed a draft Treaty on the Prevention of the Placement of Weapons in Outer Space, the Threat or Use of Force Against Outer Space Objects, but the U.S. dismissed it as "fundamentally flawed". Today, other nations are seeking to disrupt our space-based systems and challenge American supremacy in space as never before. Both countries have tested anti-satellite technology in the past and are actively pursuing hypersonic weapons that surpass current missile-defense capabilities, Pence said.

Both countries have demonstrated the ability to maneuver their satellites in "close proximity" to USA assets, posing "unprecedented new dangers", Pence stressed.

President Donald Trump repeatedly has called for the creation of a space force as a new military branch that he says is needed to ensure USA dominance in space.

On Tuesday, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis called Pence "the point man" on issues pertaining to the United States military and space.

"The time has come to establish the United States Space Force", he said, repeating Trump's call for Congress to invest an additional $8 billion in USA space security systems over the next five years.

The report also calls for the creation of "a Space Operations Force of career space experts who are trained, promoted and retained as space warfighting professionals" to include engineers, scientists, intelligence experts, operators and strategists.

He added the "Space Force" was an idea "whose time has come". "It's hard to name a specific change or program that was done as a result of that to meet that direction, seven years later", Weeden said.

But just past year, Mattis voiced skepticism concerning the need to create a separate Space Force.

While the details are still sparse, all indications are that the majority of the personnel and activities that could end up in the space force will come from the Air Force.

"This is really not needed for what ails the space business right now", the former official said. Just use the force.

First, the report calls for the creation of the U.S. Space Command, a new unified combatant command for space. But these operations are spread across the Air Force, the National Reconnaissance Office, and the Army.

The next hurdle will be to convince Congress. It also oversees Air Force cyberwarfare.

"We have been warning for years of the need to protect our space assets and to develop more capable space systems", they said in a joint statement.
