Greek teen Tsitsipas upsets defending champion Zverev at Rogers Cup

Greek teenager Stefanos Tsitsipas secured the biggest win of his career when he sent Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic packing in the third round of the Rogers Cup with a stunning 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 win on Thursday.

Tsitsipas, the 19-year-old rising star, took two hours and 17 minutes to beat Djokovic in his first-ever match against the ninth-seeded Serbian, a victor of four Canadian Open titles and a 13-time Grand Slam champion.

Tsitsipas will face second-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany, the defending champion coming off a tournament victory last week in Washington that included a semifinal win over Tsitsipas.

He earned his first match point with a cross-court forehand victor and clinched his two-hour, 18-minute victory with another one, dropping his racquet to the court with joy. "I think before he was playing really bad".

Nadal is next scheduled to face Croatian Marin Cilic, who beat Argentina's Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-2.

In the third set, the teenager showed great composure to break for a 2-0 lead and then saved a break point for a 3-0 margin. He just played better in the decisive moments.

In other results, fourth seed and Wimbledon runner-up Kevin Anderson downed Ilya Ivashka of Belarus in straight sets.

Veteran Dutchman Robin Haase advanced to the quarter-finals for the second consecutive year, beating Denis Shapovalov 7-5 6-2. Even his win over Serbia's Djokovic was not pulled out of a hat.

Djokovic had a quick break before returning to the doubles court with Anderson.

The former world number one did not look himself early on and Tsitsipas took full advantage, but the tide appeared to be turning on the 19-year-old when he was pegged back in a second-set tie-break.

The tennis player further credited Tsitsipas for the victory and praised him for displaying commitment and discipline on the court. "We want to see young players playing well and challenging the best players in the world". Nadal opens his 2018 Rogers Cup campaign in Toronto on Wednesday.
