Ivanka Trump Condemns White Supremacy, Neo-Nazism on Charlottesville Anniversary

More than 1,000 anti-fascist and anti-racist protesters are expected to descend on the U.S. capital on Sunday to counter a far-right rally, one year after the first "Unite the Right" in Charlottesville, Virginia turned deadly.

Around 10 a.m. Saturday, when many shops were beginning to open, law enforcement officers outnumbered visitors in the popular downtown shopping district. Deploying riot police along the security perimeter, law enforcement went on to erect concrete barriers and metal fences before setting up entry points with metal detectors to screen rally participants.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides", Trump said, following the events.

After last year's protests, debates erupted on whether or not Confederate monuments should be removed. "It looked like a war zone past year".

TRT World's Jacob Brown reports. Kessler backed off plans for another rally this summer and turned his focus to an event in Washington, D.C.

Violent fighting broke out between attendees and counter-protesters that day. He has pleaded not guilty and his trial is set to begin in November. Two state troopers also died that day in a helicopter crash near Charlottesville.

It was a departure from his comments a year ago in which he said "very fine people" were among the white supremacists in Charlottesville, prompting a political firestorm that lasted for days and culminated in an infamous press conference in the lobby of Trump Tower in NY.

In a tweet Saturday, the president recalled the riot's in the Virginia town resulted in senseless death and division.

"We must come together as a nation", he wrote.

On Saturday, Trump condemned "all types of racism" in a Twitter post marking the anniversary.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said Thursday she signed an order to escalate emergency operations in preparation of the rally that is scheduled to take place Sunday at Lafayette Square, a park across the street from the White House.

TRT World speaks with Shefik Macauley, a radio show host.

Ryan recalled how a group of students and community members faced off against the white supremacist marchers near a statue of Thomas Jefferson on campus, calling it a "remarkable moment of courage and bravery".

James Murray, an assistant director in the Secret Service's Office of Protective Operations, warned in a letter on Monday to the Park Service that some of the same counterprotesters who seized downtown streets at the presidential inauguration in January 2017 were also interested in Sunday's demonstrations, and were "known to have engaged in violent and destructive activity".

Authorities said two people were arrested, one for trespassing and the other for disorderly conduct. "We still have a lot of young people, old people, people who have lived here a long time... who are committed to seeing those things through". University of Virginia students will march on their Charlottesville campus Saturday night, Debbie tells Scott Simon on Weekend Edition Saturday. An extensive review identified "gaps" in planning and communication among agencies, culminating in this year's plan, Charlottesville Police Chief RaShall Brackney said.
