PGA Championship Round 4: Tiger Woods hole by hole

PGA Championship Round 4: Tiger Woods hole by hole

It also tied the 36-hole record for all majors, matching Jordan Spieth at the 2015 Masters, Martin Kaymer at the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 and Brandt Snedeker (Royal Lytham & St. Annes in 2012) and Nick Faldo (Muirfield in 1992) at the British Open. Or so many other majors over the past decade.

Tiger Woods birdied five of the first eight holes and charged into contention for his first major title since 2008 in Saturday's (Aug 11) third round of the PGA Championship.

Woods answered his bogey with an 11-foot birdie putt at the par-3 sixth and a seven-footer for birdie at the seventh, the crowds and buzz around him growing with every hole.

Australian Adam Scott has emerged as Brooks Koepka's biggest threat after shooting his way into the final group at the US PGA Championship in Missouri.

After a strong start, Woods began to struggle on the par-4 fifth hole, starting a stretch in which he seemed to need a Global Positioning System to find a fairway.

McIlroy's birdie on the par-five eighth was his first since his fourth hole on Thursday and he also chipped in on the 14th after flying the green with his approach. And what he's doing is making him impossible to overlook.

Good for Tiger. It's nice to see him excelling both on the course and off of it. He sent the ball four feet from the hole and converted the tap-in to remain at 10-under.

But it is the first time in 14 tournaments this year that Woods has faced more than 18 holes in one day due to a weather delay. Using a 9-iron, Tiger goes right at the pin and sticks it inches from the cup. "It's very warm out here so I definitely need a change of clothes and a shower and a freshen up, then I'll come back out and get ready to go".

Spieth made four birdies in the last five holes of the front nine to move all the way to 7 under before a wild drive on the par-4 12th derailed his momentum.

It's similar to last month at Carnoustie, where Woods also trailed by four heading into the final, held the lead with eight holes to go and eventually tied for sixth, three strokes behind victor Francesco Molinari. That's exactly what happened on Friday at Bellerive Country Club. "The golf course is playing soft, it's gettable, you have to make birdies".

After finishing the second round, the 80 who made the cut were sent off the first and 10th tees in trios in a bid to complete the third round by sunset. Cink, who along with Webb Simpson rounded out the 12:21 tee time, has played with Woods intermittently for decades, and he said the experience Saturday took him back.

Heading into the final round, Tiger Woods sits in a tie for sixth place, four strokes back.

ST. LOUIS - Who knows what time Tiger Woods woke up on Saturday morning, but like all of those who had to finish the second round, it was in the dark.

"They have been unbelievable", said Woods.
