Sevilla threaten Super Cup action over non-EU players

The Spanish football federation had placed no restrictions on the use of players from outside the European Union for the fixture, which is different to La Liga, in which teams are only allowed to include three per squad.

And now, ahead of Sunday's game, Sevilla have said they could withdraw from the final if opponents Barcelona name more than three non-EU players.

Barcelona take on Sevilla in the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday.

The match had endured a controversial build-up when Sevilla threatened to file a complaint against Barcelona if the La Liga champions fielded more than three non-EU players.

Played in Tangier, Morocco, this was the first Spanish Super Cup held outside Spain and the first time it was played as a single match, instead of a two-leg series.

"The club's legal department is studying the matter and should FC Barcelona submit a team with more than three non-EU players, it would present possible ground for withdrawal on account an improper line-up".

Three of Barcelona's signings this summer are non-EU with Arturo Vidal (Chile), Malcom and Arthur (both Brazilian) favourites to be in the Blaugrana's matchday squad for the Supercopa and beyond. Barca have taken four non-EU players to Morocco, including defender Marlon.

Vaclik made another save to keep out a Luis Suarez strike in the 24th minute, before Barcelona debutant Clement Lenglet - in action against his former club - headed a Messi free kick over the crossbar as chances continued to arrive.

Barca boss Ernesto Valverde was not happy with the rule change either.

"I think that Sevilla are professionals and we are professionals".

Messi, who was appointed Barca's new captain earlier this week, moved clear of Andres Iniesta as the club's most decorated player; Iniesta won 32 before moving to Japanese side Vissel Kobe this summer.

The Argentina worldwide takes over from Iniesta following his move to Vissel Kobe in the J League at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.
