Yemen buries children killed, Riyadh insists raid

Huge crowds have gathered in Sa'ada to bury dozens of children recently slain during a Saudi airstrike on a school bus in northwestern Yemen.

In a statement on Monday, Lt. Cmdr.

Yemen has been wracked by conflict since 2014, when Shia Houthi rebels overran much of the country.

Last Thursday's horrific bombing of a bus full of school children in northern Yemen was carried out using a weapon sold to the Saudi Arabia-led coalition by the United States, photo evidence of the bomb site has revealed.

Lt. Cmdr. Rebecca Rebarich, a Pentagon spokeswoman, said the general "adjusted his already scheduled visit to Saudi Arabia to discuss the incident with the Saudis and look into the situation".

Saudi officials continue to contend that the strike was a "legitimate military action".

The minister said those calling for independent investigations should instead urge the coalition "to tighten the rules of engagement".

According to reports, the Saudi-led coalition has said it would investigate the attack on the buses.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke by telephone on Monday, discussing topics including efforts by a United Nations special envoy to "to resolve the conflict in Yemen", the State Department said.

This is just the latest horrific attack on civilians by the Saudi-led coalition, which has received explicit military and political backing from the United States.

Al-Mashat said that it is highly probable that the US-backed Saudi coalition attacks residential areas, medical centers and public and private properties, and added that Yemeni forces should be ready for that.

"U.S. military support to our partners mitigates noncombatant casualties, by improving coalition processes and procedures, especially regarding compliance with the law of armed conflict and best practices for reducing the risk of civilian casualties".

MK-82 bombs, along with other "general purpose" MK series bombs, have been sold to the Saudi-led coalition by the USA through a series of contracts made in 2016 and 2017. "We don't have a lot of people on the ground".

Ahmed bin Daghr reaffirmed the Yemeni government's intention to support the talks starting on September 6 and said the intervention of the Saudi-led Arab Coalition had helped his country stand up to Iran's interference through the Houthi rebels.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said its medical teams received the bodies of 29 children, all under the age of 15.

It also said 79 others were wounded, including 56 children.

The Houthi-run al-Masirah TV on Monday quoted a health official as saying another child had died from his wounds, raising the toll to 52.
