More than 1000 Google workers protest censored China search

In this week's meeting, he said management about Chinese projects requires "a certain set of trade-offs".

Google executives have admitted that they are considering the possibility of relaunching their search engine in China after an nearly decade-long absence from the country.

It is not the first time Google employees have spoken out against the company's decisions.

But according to the reports last month, the company is working in a secret way on a new search service for China known as "Dragonfly" internally.

After the severe criticism, Google ended the Artificial Intelligence contract with the Pentagon.

It appears, for the time being, Google is continuing work on its future products for the Chinese market.

The company had also stated that Chinese hackers had tried to hack its servers and steal information from Gmail accounts of human rights activists.

As rumors of the China-based search engine have trickled out in the press, reaction on social media has been negative, with many calling the company's infamous "Don't be evil" motto into question. According to its most recent quarterly report, Alphabet (Google's parent company), employed 89,058 people as of June 30. The employees are demanding to know more about the supposed "Dragonfly" project so they can weigh the moral significance of their work at the company.

China restricts internet users by blocking websites, censoring words and clamping down on free speech.

"If we were to do our mission well, we are to think seriously about how to do more in", CEO said at a company meeting, The New York Times reported, citing leaked audio of his remarks.

"Currently we do not have the information required to make ethically-informed decisions about our work", they added.
That's assuming relations between the United States and China don't deteriorate further; the escalating trade war has already put delays on both projects.

"It's quite ridiculous that in the 21st century one of the most powerful countries in the world denies its citizens access to common knowledge", one user wrote. I genuinely do believe we have a positive impact when we engage around the world and I don't see any reason why that would be different in China.

"We'll definitely be transparent as we get closer to actually having a plan of record here".

"Yet most of us only learned about project Dragonfly through news reports in early August".

Led by co-founder Sergey Brin in 2010, the firm opted not to operate in the country amid concerns around online censorship.
