Concerns missing Chinese actor Fan Bingbing has fallen foul of authorities

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" actress Fan Bingbing is reportedly in custody after accusations of evading taxes in her native China.

Only about half of the 800 or so films made by Chinese studios past year made it to a cinema and among those 400, fewer than a quarter sold at least 100 million yuan (S$20 million) in tickets.

She was publicly linked to a tax evasion investigation in May, and has since gone silent.

There have been conflicting reports on Bingbing's whereabouts as of late, including some speculating that she is in the custody of the Chinese government, while others claim that she's seeking asylum in Los Angeles.

Several of Fan's employees were also allegedly under police investigation after the allegations of "yin and yang contracts" emerged, where the actress was said to have signed side-by-side public and private agreements that hide her real earnings to avoid paying tax.

BEIJING, Sept 11 ― China's highest paid movie star Fan Bingbing, who has not been seen in public since July, was placed last in an academic report ranking A-list celebrities on their social responsibility.

The 2017-18 China Film and Television Star Social Responsibility Report ranks Chinese celebrities according to three criteria: professional work, charitable actions and personal integrity, state media reported. The 36-year-old actress has not been photographed in public since early May, when she posed on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival for a screening of Ash Is Purest White.

China's state-run Securities Daily reported last week that Fan was "under control, and will accept the legal decision". Fan has done so much good work in the past!' One user wrote on the Twitter-like Weibo platform.

The actress's troubles began when Cui Yongyuan, a former presenter for state-run China Central Television (CCTV), posted purported contracts online in May that suggested she had received under-the-table payments. Fan's studio has denied any wrongdoing.

China's best-paid film star, Fan Bingbing, has been given zero per cent "Social Responsibility" rating by Chinese authorities after she went missing recently. Fan's boyfriend, Li Chen, also hasn't been seen since Fan disappeared.

Another report, by Taiwan's ETtoday, said last Friday that Fan had already been detained, quoting insiders close to the matters. In June, five government agencies enforced a cap of film star pay, saying that on-screen performers' salaries should be capped at 40 per cent of the total production costs.

Bingbing had been cast in upcoming all-female spy thriller "355" but it's not known if she will be available for filming given her current circumstances. A day after Securities Daily's report, news site iFeng reported that all of the offices at Fan Bingbing's studio had been cleared out.
