England's Gareth Southgate on Marcus Rashford under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United

England's Gareth Southgate on Marcus Rashford under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho will reportedly focus on turning Marcus Rashford into the complete forward after losing patience with Anthony Martial.

The 20-year-old forward impressed for England over the worldwide break as he started and scored against both Spain and Switzerland.

"We have to remember that Harry Kane at that age had hardly played anywhere near the matches for Spurs", he added, emphasising that Rashford is yet to reach his full potential and will continue to improve.

"People speaking about his minutes, they are a bit confused", he said.

Jose Mourinho knows this all too well, which is exactly why he turned up for his Friday morning press conference armed with a bunch of facts about Marcus Rashford. "He's not [Everton forward] Dominic Calvert-Lewin", said the 55-year-old.

Their dominance in the air is well augmented by Holebas' clever deliveries into risky areas and given United's propensity to concede goals off individual mistakes - in set plays, his role will be crucial come Saturday to make it 5 in a row for Watford football club.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho turned on the media once more on Friday (Sep 14) as he launched a detailed defence of his use of England global striker Marcus Rashford.

That's now his role at United, which could start to get frustrating for the country's brightest young player.

'United supporters - for you, and just for you - this is what we're doing with Rashford, (Jesse) Lingard, (Luke) Shaw, (Scott) McTominay'. "That's what we are doing here".

"Speaking about Marcus, I think I can expect that Sunday I'm going to be highly criticised for not playing him tomorrow", he told reporters ahead of United's game against Watford (via the Manchester Evening News).

However, whether Mourinho will try and capitalise on this after two defeats from four this season is anyones guess.

The former Reds defender believes that Rashford could benefit from a move away from Manchester United to establish himself as a central striker.

Mourinho, however, has hit back, reeling off a string of stats to prove that the striker has had his fair share of playing time at Old Trafford. If you want to divide that by 90 then it is 34.2 matches of 90 minutes in 16-17. Solanke is yet to feature for Liverpool this season while Loftus-Cheek has not started for Chelsea.

The argument for Rashford is that if he moved somewhere like Everton, he would get more game time.
