Florence weakens to Category 2 hurricane but still life-threatening: NHC

Florence weakens to Category 2 hurricane but still life-threatening: NHC

Florence's top sustained wind speeds dropped from a high of 140 miles per hour (225 kph) to 110 miles per hour (175 kph) as its outer rain bands approached the North Carolina coast early Thursday, reducing the storm from Category 4 to Category 2, but forecasters warned that the enormous wind field has been growing larger, raising the risk of the ocean surging on to land.

Hurricane Florence's leading edge battered the Carolina coast Thursday, bending trees and shooting frothy sea water over streets on the Outer Banks, as the hulking storm closed in with 100 miles per hour (155 kph) winds for a drenching siege that could last all weekend.

Waves slam the Oceana Pier & Pier House Restaurant in Atlantic Beach, N.C., Thursday, Sept. 13 as Hurricane Florence approaches the area.

"This storm will bring destruction", said North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper. "We will have catastrophic effects".

Public officials have been warning residents to evacuate the East Coast for the last few days, though plenty of people have chosen to bunker down in their homes, and it remains to be seen how many people may need to be rescued from the imminent floods and areas that lose power.

Hurricane Florence made landfall Friday, but the storm has only just begun for the Carolinas.

WXII-TV reported that 150 people were waiting to be rescued from rising waters in the city New Bern.

New Bern resident Latasha Jones is one of the more fortunate ones.

The mayor of Myrtle Beach says her city has done as much as it can to prepare for Hurricane Florence. "We were anxious about the hurricane, had it continued to be as strong as what they were originally stating". "Given the rarity of the magnitude of #Florence's storm surge forecast, it can be hard to grasp what that might look like or the impacts it could have on your community", the NHC said. We have steps on the sides of the house so it's a few feet off the ground anyway.

"I ask all Georgians to join me in praying for the safety of our people and all those in the path of Hurricane Florence", Deal said.

A buoy off the North Carolina coast recorded waves almost 30 feet (9 meters) high as Florence churned toward shore.

Officials have assured them they will be rescued by FEMA teams who are ready to do swift water rescue.

Rescue workers in North Carolina meanwhile were scrambling to save people stranded in their homes.

Winds and rain were arriving later in SC, and a few people were still walking on the sand at Myrtle Beach while North Carolina was getting pounded.

As of 11 p.m. EST, Florence was about 50 miles south of Morehead City, North Carolina, and 60 miles southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The center said the threat of freshwater flooding will increase over the next several days.

This is the swirling fury of Hurricane Florence as it made landfall in North Carolina on Friday seen from hundreds of miles up in space.

"Florence has slowed to a crawl as expected, and this will only exacerbate the flooding situation for the Carolinas from now through Sunday".

"It truly is really about the whole size of this storm", National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said.

Tornadoes are also possible.
