Mets' Wright to return for final game September 29

Mets' Wright to return for final game September 29

The captain will be activated from the disabled list September 25 for the team's final homestand and will start at third base September 29 against the Marlins, chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon announced Thursday.

The news of his return came with a stunning admission by Wright, who said his recovery from multiple injuries has not progressed to the point where he will be able to play again after 2018.

The announcement was made at a press conference on Thursday.

While Wright, a seven-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glover and two-time Silver Slugger Award victor, won't be playing that night, he will start at third base on Saturday, September 29. "I can not express my gratitude and appreciation for everything this organization has done and continues to do for me".

Wright is set to earn $15 million in 2019 and $12 million in 2020.

Although Wright did not say that he will officially retire, he conceded that his physical condition will not improve and doesn't think playing beyond that game will be possible. The vast majority of the Wright deal is covered by insurance, but that doesn't mean the Mets chose to do any handiwork with their savings. "Whether it's my back, my neck, my shoulder, some days that pain in any one of those three areas, or all three of the areas, can be moderate and manageable".

The 35-year old began his latest comeback in August at Class A St. Lucie, where he hit.171 with a double and two RBIs in 41 at-bats during 10 games for St. Lucie and two with Triple-A Las Vegas, according to ESPN.

"I love the game; I love the relationships; I love the preparation; I love talking baseball, anything about the game", Wright said.
