Trump's Doonbeg Visit Is Cancelled

Trump's Doonbeg Visit Is Cancelled

Mr Varadkar said there is a standing invitation for any US president to come to Ireland and many have in the past.

But White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters that no final decision had been made.

The President is scheduled to travel to G20 meetings later in November in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, and make a stop in Colombia.

Trump met with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar at the White House in March as part of the Irish leader's annual St. Patrick's Day holiday visit. "As details are confirmed we will let you know", Sanders said.

Trump surprised Ireland by announcing he would visit Dublin and a golf property on the west coast of the county after attending a parade in Paris to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the end of Word War I.

The UK campaigners behind the controversial balloon said the Irish trip was an "excellent opportunity" to "troll" Mr Trump yet again.

The White House had announced the visit on August 31, taking Varadkar by surprise.

Irish officials described scant communication from Washington in the lead-up to the trip's announcement and apparent postponement.

In 2017, Mr Varadkar's predecessor, Enda Kenny, also extended an offer for the USA president to come and visit.

He told Irish radio place RTE on September 2: "There is an originate invitation to the US President to search the advice of with Eire at any time".

But a senior Government source in Dublin said they were confident Mr Trump would not be visiting Ireland in November as planned.

Mr Trump was due to stopover in Ireland on his way home from Armistice Day commemorations in France on November 11.

But an Irish government spokesman said the trip had been "postponed".

"We will always be firm friends of the American people, but Ireland will not welcome a man with Trump's record of discrimination, sexism and lies", he said.

It was to be his first visit to the country since becoming president in 2016.
