Carolina coast braces for 'Mike Tyson punch' from hurricane

More than 1 million people have been ordered to evacuate the coastlines of the Carolinas and Virginia.

"Heed the warnings", said Byard, adding there was "well over $20 billion" in FEMA's disaster relief fund.

Florence is expected to strike North Carolina's coast on Friday, then drift southwest before moving inland on Saturday, according to Miami's National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Oddly, the closer Hurricane Florence gets to land the murkier its future gets. This storm is likely to impact our weather by late Sunday into Monday.

States up and down the East Coast have a great potential for severe weather.

The blasting wind and surging water may also damage some of the 16 nuclear reactors located in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. President Trump has declared an emergency in the three states and says the government is "as ready as anybody has ever been".

Weekend sporting events have already been canceled, with possibly more to come.

With South Carolina's beach towns more in the bull's-eye because of the shifting forecast, OH vacationers Chris and Nicole Roland put off their departure from North Myrtle Beach to get the maximum amount of time on the sand.

A hurricane warning was issued for South Santee River, SC, north to Duck, NC, and the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds.

"An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft that was in the hurricane until just after midnight" recorded a peak wind gust of around 150 miles per hour, according to the hurricane center. The only exception was Edisto Beach - that and other areas to the north remain under evacuation orders. Many major roads and arteries have reversed traffic flow to help residents evacuate quickly. Highways clogged with people fleeing North and SC early Wednesday as monstrous Category 4 Hurricane Florence rumbled toward the eastern United States as the biggest storm there in decades.

The National Weather Service is forecasting heavy rainfall Sunday through Tuesday across central SC with flooding potential in the Upstate, northeast Georgia and the mountains of western North Carolina.

"In general, we're expecting see somewhere between 5-10" of rain from Florence.

Boarding up his home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Chris Pennington watched the forecasts and tried to decide when to leave.

The East Coast isn't the only area facing the brunt of a storm. Tropical Storm Olivia is approaching the Hawaiian islands, the Philippines are bracing for the powerful typhoon Mangkhut, and Tropical Storm Isaac is nearing the Leeward Islands.

Its expected sluggishness is becoming more common, a result of climate change, said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration climate scientist and hurricane expert Jim Kossin.

The landfall location is expected to be between Wilmington and Morehead City, North Carolina.

Another disturbance is swirling around in the Gulf of Mexico.
