The storm is expected to dump as much as 10 trillion gallons of rain on North Carolina as it stalls on the US East Coast state.

The National Hurricane Center said Florence will eventually break up over the southern Appalachians and make a right hook to the northeast, its rainy remnants moving into the mid-Atlantic states and New England by the middle of next week.

Hurricane Florence made landfall Friday morning on the North Carolina coast, with its strong winds and blinding rain having already driven risky storm surges of several feet into nearby beach and river towns. Its forward movement was 6 miles per hour. Tropical Storm Isaac is forecast to approach the Lesser Antilles Islands on Thursday.
