Khan far from impressive in victory over Vargas

"There were times in the fight when I wanted to put him away, there were times when I could have pushed it and knocked him out", he added. "I know I've trained very hard for this fight so nothing can go wrong and I really believe that I will win in style".

Khan managed to overcome his opponent in all 12 rounds of the game, with the decision of his win being made based on points. "There were a couple of times when I could have stopped him and I kind of stepped off him", he said.

Khan's great domestic rival, Kell Brook, was at ringside and can hardly have been anxious by Khan's display.

Brook is scheduled to box again on September 22 in another warm-up fight for title. Huge round five for Khan who mercilessly battered Vargas, but things slowed after that.

'If it's not Pacquiao we go back to the drawing board and then look at Brook'. "Pacquiao is an fantastic fighter.”".

Amir Khan, Eddie Hearn and Samuel Vargas give their thoughts on the next steps for the British boxer.

'There is a massive demands for me, but there is only one fighter over Kell Brook and that is Manny Pacquiao. In a wild round two, Khan dropped Vargas and had it all going his way when suddenly Vargas floored Khan with a big right hand just before the bell. The fight would continue with Khan outlanding Vargas and being the aggressor throughout the last 10 rounds.

"He (Vargas) caught me with an overhand right hand, right on the button, I got back up and I was fine". But Khan replied with a quick flurry and the Briton seemed in control, but at the same time vulnerable. "I'll be challenging for a world title in my opinion by the end of the year, or early next year", he said.

"Kell is the don when he is stronger, but I actually think Khan could beat Kell at welterweight".

But Khan's work rate dipped in the tenth, allowing Vargas to land more punches and finished the round by landing a solid right hook on Khan's chin which turned his legs to jelly.

He was up quickly but was immediately sent staggering backwards again amid more lightning Khan combinations. Although Khan showed heart, there was little on show to concern Brook.
