Celtics' Jabari Bird charged with attacking his girlfriend

Boston Celtics guard Jabari Bird is expected to be arraigned in the Brighton courthouse Thursday, his first appearance in public since his arrest by Boston police last Friday on a domestic violence charge and his subsequent hospitalization.

On Thursday, the Celtics released a statement saying the team does not condone domestic violence in any way and is "deeply disturbed" by the allegations against Bird.

Bird spent several days in a hospital. A month after the former second-round pick signed his first full-time National Basketball Association contract with the Celtics, the 24-year-old was arrested Saturday in Boston's Brighton neighbourhood on charges of domestic assault, strangulation and kidnapping.

Bird then signed a two-year, standard National Basketball Association contract in July - making him an official member of the Celtics' 15-man roster - after averaging 16.8 points on 57 percent shooting in summer league.

Bird, who pleaded not guilty, was released on $50,000 bail, and he is set to appear in court again October 25, nine days after Boston tips off its regular season. The victim stated that she escaped when Bird began having "seizure-like symptoms".

"I'm taking some time away from the team as I deal with my legal and medical issues", Bird said in the statement.

An attorney for Bird did not dispute the specific allegations at the hearing, but he told the judge that there are "always two sides to every story".

The Celtics called the allegations disturbing and said the team's 'thoughts are with the victim'.

Bird attacked the victim over the course of several hours, prosecutors said, at times throwing her against a wall.

He apologized to his family, the Celtics, his teammates, fans and the National Basketball Association "for the unnecessary distraction that I have caused". 'The information that has been released does not tell the full story. "I am hopeful that in due time and process, I will be able to regain everyone's trust".

The team notes that domestic violence issues are handled by the NBA's main office. Authorities also said that he threatened to kill himself in a text message to the woman. A Summer League standout this past July, Bird recently signed a two-year contract, which featured a fully guaranteed contract for the 2018-19 season, with the Celtics to round out their National Basketball Association roster.

Bird could face up to 10 years in prison if he's found guilty of the kidnapping and/or assault and battery charges.
