Deadly Tropical Storm Florence brings 'epic' amount of rain to US

Hurricane Florence was making landfall in North Carolina early Friday pushing a life-threatening storm surge for miles inland with screaming wind that was destroying buildings in its path.

"Hurricane Florence is powerful, slow and relentless", Cooper said. His state has already endured record rainfall totals, with much more expected to come from the storm that forecasters said was 480 km wide.

Hurricane Florence is dumping rain on North Carolina and pushing a storm surge taller than most humans onto communities near the coast.

Over 100 people remain trapped in New Bern, a town on the Neuse River which has been hit hard by rain and flooding. "That's why we've been preaching to people that you have to get away from the water". He said "if those shelters fill up, we will establish more shelters".

Energy Secretary Rick Perry says the US electricity sector has been well prepared for Hurricane Florence even as hundreds of thousands of homes lose power in the storm.

SC authorities said law enforcement officers were guarding against looting in evacuated areas.

A woman in Hampstead, in Pender County, died of an apparent heart attack after emergency crews could not clear debris to get to her. A 78-year-old man was electrocuted attempting to connect extension cords while another man died when he was blown down by high winds while checking on his hunting dogs, a county spokesman said.

So far: almost 32.5 inches (82.5 centimeters) of rain was reported in Oriental, North Carolina.

Meteorologist Ryan Maue of weathermodels.com said Florence could dump a staggering 18 trillion gallons (68 trillion liters) of rain over a week on North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Maryland.

The White House said President Trump had issued a disaster declaration for North Carolina a day earlier, freeing up funds for housing and home fix.

Florence made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane at 7:15 a.m.at Wrightsville Beach, a few miles east of Wilmington and not far from the SC line, coming ashore along a mostly boarded-up, emptied-out stretch of coastline. On Saturday, the storm was crawling westward at about 2 miles per hour, unleashing havoc as it went.

More than 10 million people are under hurricane watches or warnings and 1.7 million have been ordered to evacuate the coast.
