Eliud Kipchoge sets new world record in Berlin Marathon win

Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge set a new marathon world record in Berlin on Sunday, smashing the previous best as he clocked 2 hours 1 minute and 40 seconds. With already half a marathon behind him, the Kenyan nevertheless managed to run an incredibly quick time. Instead it transpired that the pacemakers were holding him back.

At 15km, Kipchoge was on pace to run 2:02:44, but that mark would be highly unlikely if Boit couldn't hold on until at least the 25km banner.

With Boit doing a stellar job of maintaining his solitary charge at the front, the pair passed through 20km in 57:56 and the halfway mark at 61:06 - nearly on par with the target of 61 minutes for the first half.

For months before the race, Kipchoge has maintained that he was focused on winning in Berlin. While trying to shatter the two-hour marathon barrier, Nike devised a plan for Kipchoge to race under optimal conditions where temperatures were almost ideal for the Formula 1 track in Monza, Italy and he could be assisted by an alternating cast of pacers almost every step of the way.

With weather conditions ideal and virtually no wind, it was clear after the opening few kilometres that Kipchoge's only opponent would be the clock and his three pacemakers were pushed to the limit to keep the tempo high as Kipchoge dipped well below world-record time by the halfway mark.

The fastest German was Valentin Harwardt with 2:19:54. The only question was how far inside Kimetto's record he would get.

"It's a breathless leap in the world of marathon running", said one excited commentator as Kipchoge passed 40km in 1:55:32.

The Newspaper added: "When Kipchoge actually enters a race, he sends ripples through the field before his races even begin".

Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge reacts after winning the Berlin Marathon setting a new world record on September 16, 2018 in Berlin.

Kipchoge is regarded as one of the greatest marathon runners of all time.

The previous track record was set by Mizuki Noguchi of Japan 13 years ago.

Kipchoge ran his first 5km in 14:24, a whole 1:26 ahead of world record pace, and reached 10km in 29:01.

Kipchoge has won 10 of the 11 marathons he's run.
