Hurricane Florence from space

Carrying winds of up to 140 miles per hour (220 kph) as a Category 4 storm, Hurricane Florence is expected to approach Category 5 status on Tuesday as it slows and strengthens off North and SC.

Governors in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia have declared states of emergency in preparation for Florence.

In addition to winds, the storm is expected to slow as it moves onto the coast and could deliver 15 to 20 inches of rain, with 30 inches locally, in North Carolina, Virginia and northern SC, the NHC said.

A mandatory evacuation order takes effect Tuesday at noon in eight counties along South Carolina's 187-mile coastline.

South Carolina's Governor Henry McMaster has told people they need to leave the area by noon on Tuesday.

We are in communication with the National Weather Service, state and local authorities, the Southeastern Conference, Marshall University and schools that other programs that we compete against this week regarding potential weather issues.

"Florence is quickly becoming a powerful hurricane", a hurricane specialist wrote.

Almost 759,000 homes with a reconstruction cost value (RCV) of approximately $170.2 billion are at potential risk of storm surge damage from Hurricane Florence based on its Category 4 status, CoreLogic said in an analysis released late Monday. SC governor Henry McMaster also suspended his campaign and asked President Donald Trump for a federal emergency declaration. North Carolina seems to be the state that could bear the brunt of the winds, along with SC and parts of southern Virginia.

"We're preparing as we're playing the football game on Saturday with all of our travel plans and we'll be in constant communication with South Carolina", Hamrick said.

In a 5 p.m. EDT update from the NHC, the storm's winds rose to 140 miles per hour, and it picked up speed in its westward track, doubling its speed from Sunday to 13 miles per hour.

For many, the challenge could be finding a safe refuge. Home Depot and Lowe's activated emergency response centers to get generators, trash bags and bottled water to stores before and after the storm. Forecasters also were tracking two other disturbances.

In North Carolina, coastal evacuations were also underway late Monday - with more scheduled to begin on Tuesday.

Florence is about 644 kilometres wide and it's winds have dropped from a peak of 225 km/h to 165 km/h, reducing the hurricane from a terrifying Category 4 to a Category 2. "We're just a strip of land - we're a barrier island", she said. Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune urged people to secure their homes but said it was too early to know if evacuations will be ordered.

"Do you want to get hit with a train or do you want to get hit with a cement truck?" said Jeff Byard, an administrator with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. That's prompted criticism from some on social media who've said they faced change fees and fare differences as they attempted to change flights to deal with the storm.

Hurricane Isaac - which late on Sunday became the fifth hurricane of the season - is heading west towards the Caribbean.
