Hurricane Hunters flying into Florence as it heads for the Carolinas

Viewed through the wide-angle camera of the International Space Station which orbits at 250 miles (400 kilometers) above Earth, Hurricane Florence appears swirling above the Atlantic Ocean as it's moving west-northwest towards the North and SC.

"This storm is about flooding", Perry Samson, a professor of climate and space science at the University of MI, told Live Science.

Florence is now rated a Category 3 on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, but life-threatening storm surge and rainfall is still expected across portions of the Carolinas, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Wednesday.

Hurricane Florence, the Category 2 storm heading straight for my parents' SC house, has the country on high alert.

Expected to make landfall by Friday, the impact of the storm will be widespread, with destructive winds, life-threatening storm surge, risky surf, torrential rainfall, flooding and the potential for tornadoes. "While some weakening is expected to begin by late Thursday, Florence is still forecast to be an extremely risky major hurricane when it nears the US coast on Friday", the NHC said in an 11 a.m. As the hurricane moves along the coast, it won't lose as much steam as it would if it traveled on land.

"Usually the north and east side [of the storm] is where we see the highest rainfall amounts and the greatest tornado threat". "So, there's not a lot of capacity to soak up the extra water", Samson said. "You feel like you should have already left". "I would go visit a relative somewhere away from the shoreline". "I'll be living there for a few days".

"The safety of our customers and our communities remains top priority for Piedmont Natural Gas as Hurricane Florence approaches the Carolinas", said Piedmont Executive Vice President Frank Yoho, who also is president of Duke's natural gas business.

The storm is expected to being heavy rain, powerful winds, and a strong storm surge.

"In collaboration with state emergency agencies and the Georgia Hospital Association, we are monitoring bed counts daily so that we can quickly and accurately assist with any necessary evacuations", said Sydney Walker, spokesperson for Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center. "He lives in North Carolina".

President Donald Trump declared states of emergency for North and SC and Virginia, opening the way for federal aid.

Computer models of exactly what the storm might do varied, adding to the uncertainty.

However, since the Fukushima disaster in 2011, US power plants have installed more safety equipment, such as waterproofing, portable pumps and generators, Duke Energy spokeswoman Mary Kathryn Green told Reuters.
