Alzheimer's, Dementia Rate To Double In US by 2060

CDC Director Robert R. Redfield, M.D said that the study portrays that as the USA population grows the number of people impacted by Alzheimer's disease and associated dementias will also grow particularly amongst splinter groups.

The paper first classifies predictions for Alzheimer's disease by race and ethnicity.

"It's a bit like solving a jigsaw puzzle without knowing what the result needs to look like", says Pierre Tariot, director of the Banner Alzheimer's Institute in Phoenix, Arizona.

World Alzheimer's Day, which is observed on September 21, is an global campaign aimed at raising awareness and to challenge the common stigma that surrounds Alzheimer's.

That's estimated to be about three percent of the population by then.

The devastating neurodegenerative disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., and caring for the surviving sufferers costs hundreds of billions of dollars. It's an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that slowly robs people of memory and, eventually, a person's ability to perform even the simplest tasks.

But that number is estimated to increase to 13.9 million by 2060, equaling almost 3.3 percent of a projected population of 417 million people. A precursor to Alzheimer's disease is dementia, and it has been found in clinical practices that if the warning signs are picked up early, it helps in the overall management of the disease. It's the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. But as more people live longer, the numbers will inevitably go up.

Non-Hispanic whites have the highest number of cases because of the size of the population, but Hispanics are facing the highest projected increase.

Among those 65 and older, African Americans have the highest prevalence of Alzheimer's and related dementia diseases, at 13.8 percent, followed by Latinos, whites, American Indian and Alaskan Natives and Asian and Pacific Islanders.

What's most important, Alzheimer's experts agree, is getting a diagnosis early enough to prepare for possibly years of worsening disability.

But there's still a need for more participants, said Anton Porsteinsson, who directs the Alzheimer's care, research and education program at the University of Rochester Medical Center. More women (13.3 percent) than men (9.2percent) were diagnosed in 2014.

"It is important for people who think their daily lives are impacted by memory loss to discuss these concerns with a health care provider", said Kevin Matthews, a CDC health geographer who led the study team.
