Bill Cosby's sentencing for aggravated indecent assault begins today

Montgomery County Judge Steven T. O'Neill will have the final say.

As it stands, Cosby faces up to 30 years in prison.

Bill Cosby's wife announced Friday that she's retained a former prosecutor to investigate the judge who will preside over her husband's looming sentencing.

Accusers Lise-Lotte Lublin and Chelan Lasha, who, with Gloria Allred, spoke to the Associated Press said that they hope they will be able to read victim impact statements before Cosby is sentenced on three felony counts of aggravated indecent assault.

In June 2017, she described being given pills that left her "frozen" and unable to stop Cosby from assaulting her. If that happens, he will be obliged to register as a sex offender for life, instead of for a shorter timeframe decided by a judge.

Cosby's defense team is expected to appeal the guilty verdict and the judge could allow Cosby to remain on house arrest until the appeal is resolved.

Prosecutors said they would "present numerous witnesses who will testify that defendant sexually abused them" and argued those "uncharged crimes" were relevant to establishing Cosby's character and as a danger to the community.

One key issue for the sentencing hearing is whether Cosby will be designated a "sexually violent predator". Prosecutors asked this month to bring in an unspecified number of them to testify at the hearing, despite most of their accusations being too old to allow for criminal charges.

The trial - his second, after the jury in a first trial failed to reach a verdict - was the first of a celebrity accused of sexual assault since the beginning of the #MeToo movement.

Cosby's lawyers opposed the request for additional accusers to testify at the sentencing hearing.

Once adored by millions for his defining role on "The Cosby Show", he has been confined to his Philadelphia area mansion on a $1 million bail for almost three years, fitted with a Global Positioning System monitor and subjected to a violent sexual predator assessment after his guilty conviction. The appeals process could take years, however, and the 81-year-old has yet to set foot in a jail cell.
