Iran criticises the Netherlands for 'sheltering terrorists' after parade attack

In the immediate aftermath of the attack on Saturday, Iranian authorities said they suspected Arab separatist groups were responsible.

Funerals are underway in Iran for the victims of the weekend terror attack on a military parade in the southwestern city of Ahvaz.

The region's Arab separatists, once only known for nighttime attacks on unguarded oil pipelines, claimed responsibility.

This year's parades had special significance as tensions with the United States have peaked since the USA withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal in May and began to re-impose unilateral economic sanctions on Tehran.

Brig-Gen Hossein Salami said in a speech to mourners at Monday's funeral: "You have seen our revenge before. we promise that our response will be crushing and devastating and you will regret what you have done".

"You have seen our revenge before..."

"The cowardly attack was carried out by the same people who, whenever trapped in Syria or Iraq, the United States comes to save them", said Khamenei in a possible reference IS claims of responsibility.

The UN Security Council has condemned a terrorist attack in the Iranian southwestern city of Ahvaz, calling on the worldwide community to "cooperate" with Tehran in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

A news agency affiliated with the Islamic State terrorist group released a video Sunday which purported to show the perpetrators of the shooting attack.

When asked whether that meant Trump would be willing to sit down with Iran's ayatollah, Pompeo replied, "The president said he'll talk with anyone if we can have a constructive conversation".

According to Reuters, four militants dressed as soldiers fired into the crowd during the parade in the city of Ahvaz. He stressed the United States had no advance knowledge that such an attack was possible.

State media said the four attackers were dead.

Nikki Haley, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, dismissed Iran's assertion that Washington and its Gulf allies were to blame for a deadly parade attack and said Tehran should look closer to home. "It could be in a few days, months, a couple of years, but it's going to happen", said Giuliani, noting the impact of United States sanctions on the Iranian currency and economy.

The victims were primarily members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Iran accuses Saudi Arabia and the UAE of doing the same in Khuzestan.

The Guard Corps was set up after the 1979 Islamic revolution to protect the Shi'ite clerical ruling system and revolutionary values. The claim further raises tensions in the Mideast as Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers is in jeopardy after President Donald Trump withdrew the USA from the accord.

Intelligence Minister Mahmud Alavi told the crowd that arrests have been made in connection with the attack. It answers to Ayatollah Khamenei and has an estimated 125,000-strong military with army, navy and air units.
