Google faces ire of users for signing-in without consent

Now it has begun automatically logging users into Chrome sans their consent - which can lead to all your personal data getting shipped to Google's servers.

Google risks provoking another big fine from European regulators if it presses ahead with a proposed revamp of its Chrome web browser, leading competition lawyers have claimed. But Google isn't seeing any more or less of his data now than before, and won't unless users opt in. More people syncing data is obviously a good thing for Google, but this doesn't seem to be a sneaky trick. The profile photo is meant to serve as a reminder to the user that they are signed into a Google service, not the browser.

A Google Chrome user recently pointed out on Hacker News that Google now forces you to login to your Google account on Chrome if you login to any other Google service using the browser. He blogged about it in full here. But even if this isn't a case of Google logging you in to Chrome without your consent, for the objective of grabbing your data, it certainly looked that way.

In response to the concerns, Google has updated its privacy policy.

Chrome is among the most widely used browsers in the market.

This is where Green, who said he quit using Chrome because of the change, reserved some of his harshest criticism of Google. "In addition to stellar security, it includes all the usual features you would expect from a mobile browser, including incognito browsing, browser bookmarks, and password management".

Now, the browser just automatically links all the user's data which has received some flak from the users. Users have to turn that on separately.

According to ZDNet, the change has angered Google users. A quick explanation. Chrome browser can be accessed in two modes: Signed-in or basic mode.

On desktop versions of Chrome, signing into or out of any Google web service (e.g. google.com) signs you into or out of Chrome. "Arguably, enabling Sync is now so streamlined that you could conceivably do it by accident (or someone borrowing your PC could do it for you)".

The clarification hasn't made Green much happier. If you dig further into settings and try and delete your site data, you will discover that Google will recreate your Google cookies immediately, making sure they can always keep track of you.

Before Chrome 69, this sync feature was already there for a long period. Following this update, the process can be achieved with a single click that is easy to do by accident. That's scary! Wait, maybe it's an invitation to synchronize! Green asked. "Nobody can quite tell me if the data uploaded in these conditions is the same".

He calls this change a "dark pattern", a term used to describe user interfaces that have been intentionally created to be misleading.

He isn't the only person to have noticed that. Michał Zalewski, is a computer security expert and former Google employee.

As the weeks passed, users have since noted some decidedly more worrying behaviour.

Green had personally been using Chrome without logging in for years.
