Trump says China is interfering in midterm elections

Trump claimed at a United Nations Security Council meeting Wednesday that the Chinese are engaged in an active measures to disrupt the 2018 elections in retaliation for his hard-hitting tariffs.

The Trump administration says China is stepping up covert and overt activities to stifle free speech, punish those who support the president's tough trade stance against China and interfere in the US political system. "We are winning at every level", President Trump said.

Trump, in his meeting with Abe, warned China again that "they can't get involved with our elections", strong rhetoric that stood in stark contrast to his reluctance to acknowledge or condemn Russia's efforts to interfere with the 2016 election.

The comments came amid the Trump administration's trade war against Beijing and were a forceful rebuke of what he said was an attempt by China to meddle in the November 6 midterm elections.

United States intelligence officials have previously blamed Russian Federation for meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election.

In his own statement to the session later, Mr. Wang appeared to break from his prepared statement at the end to deny what he called the "unwarranted" US accusation of election-meddling.

Following his own remarks at the U.N. Security Council meeting on Wednesday, Trump told reporters, "We have evidence".

His national security adviser, John Bolton, was to go even further in a speech Tuesday, issuing a dire warning to Iran: "If you cross us, our allies or our partners; if you harm our citizens; if you continue to lie, cheat and deceive, yes, there will indeed be hell to pay", Bolton said, according to prepared remarks released by the White House.

The president's discussion of Chinese influence operations also comes amid growing tensions between the USA and Chinese militaries.

He says, "they would like to see me lose an election because they've never been challenged like this".

Fleming said China has upped the ante on "everything short of war" in direct response to Trump's tariffs. He said Donald Trump, they don't know what to do, ' Trump said.

Without naming countries, the US President noted that "some nations are already violating UN sanctions" including illegal ship-to-ship transfers of oil and said compliance was "very, very important". He also used the topic to talk about Iran, North Korea and the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

A senior administration official who briefed reporters on the interference by China said Beijing is using a large-scale program of "united front" Communist Party activities involving political, economic, commercial, military, and informational tools.

Barely an hour before he spoke, in fact, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres declared to the assembly that global cooperation is the world's best hope and "multilateralism is under fire precisely when we need it most".

Asked about a USA bomber flight over the contested South China Sea this week, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told reporters on Wednesday the flights were routine.

He also called upon other countries to observe the same principle, citing the United Nations charter.
