Senate to hold procedural vote on Kavanaugh on Saturday

Senate to hold procedural vote on Kavanaugh on Saturday

President Donald Trump has ordered the FBI to look into "credible" allegations against his Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh, but the bureau has one week to complete the task.

Flake's stunning 11th-hour move played out on national television amid heated partisan debate and raucous protests in the halls of the Capitol, where one woman cornered the Arizona senator in an elevator demanding he oppose Kavanaugh, citing her own experience with sexual assault.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of SC also mentioned the ABA's assessment during an impassioned defense of Kavanaugh on Thursday.

Kavanaugh wouldn't answer directly when he was asked Thursday if he would agree to an FBI investigation, but said he would do whatever the Judiciary Committee wanted. "What you are doing is allowing someone who actually violated a woman to sit on the Supreme Court".

The Senate Judiciary Committee has voted along party lines to advance Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination to the Senate floor.

Said Flake: "I think it would be proper to delay the floor vote for up to but not more than one week, in order to let the FBI do an investigation, limited in time and scope to the current allegations that are there".

"Not even a little bit", Trump said.

A US Senate committee has voted to approve Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the US Supreme Court as discussions continue over a possible Federal Bureau of Investigation inquiry into allegations of sexual misconduct.

"Instead of watching, I decided I would be better served by praying for the people who were talking and listening", Conger said.

Kavanaugh needs at least 50 votes to be confirmed by the 100 member Senate.

There was some confusion within the committee regarding the veracity of Flake's pronouncement, because he did not have a finalized deal with GOP leaders and it was uncertain that Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would go along with his demands. "I hoped that would help provide leverage", Flake said.

The AP does not usually name people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they come forward publicly about the allegations, as these women have done.

He said, "Thank you", but did not respond to questions on whether he believed Dr Ford's testimony. Two other women besides Ford have also lodged public sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh. "A good day", he said. Kavanaugh denied the accusation and accused Democrats - who have opposed his nomination from the outset - of a "calculated and orchestrated political hit". Republicans are trying to gain the vote of Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, a state that Trump won comfortably, along with Republican Senators Susan Collins of ME and Murkowski of Alaska.

Later, Flake told reporters, "I want to support Judge Kavanaugh".

"This country's being ripped apart here", Flake told his fellow senators about the nomination fight.

All the Republicans voted in favour, while all the Democrats voted against.

Trump nominated him to replace Anthony Kennedy, who for years was a swing vote between four conservative and four liberal justices. "But we live in a country where you are presumed innocent, and you have to corroborate accusations of felonies, and there's no corroboration here".
