NJ Surfer Dies From Rare, "Brain-Eating Amoeba"

NJ Surfer Dies From Rare,

The 29-year-old man died in New Jersey in September after falling ill with Naegleria fowleri.

Stabile, whose family said he was an avid outdoorsman who loved to surf, had been at the park on vacation.

Fabrizio Stabile, 29, died September 21, according to his obituary.

The amoeba, called Naegleria fowleri, is typically seen in fresh water.

BSR Cable Park's Surf Resort is closed while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tests for Naegleria fowleri, a rare but highly deadly amoeba, CBS affiliate KBTX-TV reports.

Kelly Craine, Waco-McLennan County Public Health District spokesperson said, "The CDC collected water samples and are now investigating to find the source".

CDC is assisting the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District on an investigation into a potential Naegleria fowleri exposure at an aquatic facility. We are in compliance with the CDC guidelines and recommendations concerning Naegleria fowleri'. It most commonly enters the body through the nose, where it travels to the brain causing primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM).

In very rare instances, Naegleria infections may also occur when contaminated water from other sources (such as inadequately chlorinated swimming pool water or heated and contaminated tap water) enters the nose. "Our hearts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the New Jersey surf community during this hard time", park owner Stuart E. Parsons Jr. said in a statement, per the AP.

The surf resort has been closed pending the test results from the CDC, he said. The organizations statistics indicate that since 1962 there have been 143 confirmed cases, of which only four people survived.

'BSR Surf Resort operates a state of the art artificial man-made wave.
