Birds Drunk on Fermented Berries are Causing Chaos in a Minnesota City

Local residents commenting on the post reported seeing intoxicated birds around town.

Residents of Gilbert, Minnesota, have been reporting birds flying into windows and cars and acting generally confused. In Gilbert, an early frost has fermented local berries, leading to young birds getting drunk from eating them. "They're just careless and they're not looking for cars or other obstacles".

Luckily, Techar says that, much like people, the birds will sober up after their berry bender and stop harassing unsuspecting townsfolk. As James Owen explained in a 2014 piece for National Geographic, freezing prompts berries to convert starches into sugars, and when the berries subsequently thaw, "it [is] possible for yeast to get in" and expedite fermentation. The answer was bizarrely familiar: the birds were flying under the influence.

Officials in Gilbert, Minnesota have asked residents to be aware of birds flying under the influence.

He said robins, cedar waxwings and thrushes are the bird species most likely to tie one on since they eat more berries than other species.

"Generally, younger birds" livers can not handle the toxins as efficiently as more mature birds'.

You hear stories of humans having the cops called on them due to intoxication, but birds?

Putting decals on large reflective surfaces can help tipsy birdies avoid fatal crashes, according to the National Audubon Society, which also recommends that birds be left alone if they collide with windows and survive.

Authorities expect they will sober up some time in the near future.
