Mike Pence says 'no doubt' China is meddling in US elections

Vice President Mike Pence delivered a hard-hitting speech Thursday criticising China for a host of aggressive actions from economics to geopolitics.

China hit back furiously on Friday, branding Pence's accusation "ridiculous".

Pence's speech comes amid rumors that the US military is proposing a "major show of force" near China's territorial waters in November - "several missions" over the course of a week to demonstrate American naval and air superiority within striking distance of mainland China.

Washington blames China for hacking into U.S. government and corporate databases although officials and independent analysts have failed to detected the kind of systematic manipulation of social media and hacking of emails that Russian Federation is alleged to have engaged in before Mr Trump's shock election victory in 2016.

But Pence said: "As a senior career member of our intelligence community told me just this week, what the Russians are doing pales in comparison to what China is doing across this country". He provided the same example previously tweeted by the president - a four-page, paid advertisement critical of Mr. Trump's trade policies that appeared in the Des Moines Register.

The White House responded publicly Thursday to a heated confrontation between the Chinese navy and a USA destroyer in the South China Sea this past weekend.

"This is nothing but speaking on hearsay evidence, confusing right and wrong and creating something out of thin air".

He said that Chinese officials have tried to persuade business leaders to condemn administration policy, using methods such as denying a business license to a corporation if it didn't condemn those policies.

"It is very ridiculous for the United States side to stigmatise its normal exchanges and cooperation with China as China interfering in its internal affairs and elections", Hua said.

China said a Chinese warship had been sent to warn the United States vessel to leave an area of irrefutable Chinese sovereignty.

The democratic, self-governing island is home to nationalists who fled in 1949 after losing China's civil war and has waged an increasingly lonely campaign for diplomatic recognition as the Republic of China. "And while our administration will continue to respect our "one China" policy, as reflected in the Three Joint Communiques and the Taiwan Relations Act, let me also say that Taiwan's embrace of democracy shows a better path for all the Chinese people", Pence was to say.

Over half an hour, Mr Pence condemned China's growing control at home and overseas, citing examples of religious oppression, human rights abuses, visa delays and denials for scholars, and even intimidation campaigns against Chinese students in the US.

Pence also accused China of "reckless harassment" because of an incident on Sunday in which a USA destroyer, the Decatur, traveled within 12 nautical miles of Gaven and Johnson Reefs in the Spratly Islands in the disputed South China Sea.

'The United States Navy will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever worldwide law allows and our national interests demand, ' Pence said. The vice president, a favorite of conservative US Christians, also criticized China on human rights, voicing disappointment that rising prosperity has not led to reforms.
