'We will not stand down,' VP Pence warns China

'We will not stand down,' VP Pence warns China

Amid unprecedented tensions between the two nations, Pence accused China of trying, among other things, to influence the midterm elections to the extent that all the efforts perpetually undertaken by malicious Russian actors to obfuscate American minds and undermine U.S. democracy "pales" in comparison.

The White House is trying to make the case that China is taking new and more aggressive steps aimed at influencing USA elections, political debates and policies, even suggesting that Beijing wants to oust President Donald Trump. He says an intelligence official told him that what "the Russians are doing pales in comparison to what China is doing across this country".

His speech marked a sharpened USA approach toward China that goes beyond the bitter trade war between the world's two biggest economies and includes disputes about cyber activities, Taiwan, freedom of the seas and human rights.

Pence also assailed China over its actions in the South China Sea, where the USA has criticized the Chinese government for building military bases on reclaimed reefs.

Noting that the Trump administration is now taking a more assertive stance towards China, Pence slammed Beijing's policies on everything from trade to maritime disputes in the South China Sea.

Pence alleged China was waging a sophisticated effort to sway the November 6 elections against Trump's Republican Party in retaliation for his trade policies against Beijing and vowed to continue to expose Beijing's "malign influence and interference".

"China has initiated an unprecedented effort to influence American public opinion, the 2018 elections, and the environment leading into the 2020 presidential elections", Pence said.

Pence's speech at the Hudson Institute think tank in Washington marked a sharpened USA approach toward China that goes beyond the bitter trade war between the world's two biggest economies and includes disputes such as cyber activities, Taiwan, freedom of the seas and human rights.

Pence's sharply worded address comes days before Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is due to visit China on a trip focused on nuclear diplomacy with North Korea - an area in which the United States still seeks Beijing's cooperation. Trump didn't provide much evidence to back up the accusation, pointing to an advertisement the Chinese government took out in an Iowa newspaper attacking the president's trade policies.

According to Pence, the USA intelligence community says China is "targeting US state and local governments and officials to exploit any divisions between federal and local levels on policy". "That will strengthen the Communist Party's censorship and compromise the privacy of Chinese customers", said Pence.

Vice President Mike Pence today called on Google to stop development of its censored search product for China.

"The Chinese military resolutely opposes such actions", the ministry added.

He accused China of "reckless harassment" because of an incident on Sunday in which a Chinese naval vessel almost collided with a USA destroyer, the Decatur, near the Spratly islands.

Describing the Chinese efforts as a very serious problem, Bolton said the American people are a very independent lot and as such they want other people interfering US's our decision-making process.

Pence mentioned Taiwan several times in the speech, in particular criticising Beijing for pushing three Latin American nations to sever ties with Taipei.
