John Terry announces retirement from playing football

Terry captained Essien and his other Chelsea teammates to nine trophies including the English Premier League, FA Cup, Football League Cup, FA Community Shield and UEFA Champions League.

It is understood that the legendary Arsenal forward, 41, will bring in former Villa captain John Terry as a key member of his coaching staff.

He wrote in a post: "After 23 incredible years as a footballer, I have decided now is the right time to retire from playing".

Meanwhile Terry was widely ridiculed when, after Chelsea beat Bayern Munich to win the 2012 Champions League final, he appeared in full playing kit for the post-match celebrations despite not taking part in the game because of suspension.

He left Chelsea in 2017 to join Aston Villa, and has not played for anyone else since his contract expired with the Championship club at the end of last season.

The 37-year-old made a name for himself as an imposing centre-half at Chelsea were he amassed over 500 appearances.

According to reports, both men interviewed for the role, with the Villa hierarchy deciding that Henry's experience was enough to warrant his appointment as manager.

Former Blackburn striker Chris Sutton, who played for Villa in 2006-07 before injury ended his professional career, believes Terry has the attributes to succeed. Right from the outset they have given me total support, on and off the pitch, and I have a tremendous bond with them, he added.

Petrov, 39, spent seven years as a player with Villa before being an academy and then team coach with the club, but with no managerial experience, it always seemed unlikely that he would be appointed.

"It was a privilege to represent such a renowned football club with great fans".

At one stage he was said to have been close to a move to Spartak Moscow, but he is said to have rejected that opportunity having held talks with the Russian side in September.
