Nikki Haley resigns from the Trump administration

US President Donald Trump met with Haley at the Oval Office in front of news cameras shortly after reports of her resignation Tuesday, saying the departure had been planned for several months.

Susan Page, D.C. Bureau Chief for USA Today, said on MSNBC shortly after the presser, "So maybe Jared Kushner or Ivanka is going to be the new United Nations ambassador, with that big endorsement".

Her resignation stunned White House staffers, U.S. media reported on Tuesday. "If I disagree with something and believe it is important enough to raise with the president, I do it", she wrote at the time.

Her departure is being seen as a blow for the White House just weeks before the United States midterm election.

She also complimented members of Trump's team, including senior advisers Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. We spoke out resolutely against dictatorships in Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba, and yes, Russia.

White House officials had sought to put a hold on record-setting administration turnover in the run-up to the November 6 elections, with aides being asked months ago to step down or commit to stay through Election Day to avoid adding to a sense of turmoil. The White House is effectively announcing the exit of its most popular Cabinet-level official - the extremely rare one who has strong approval among both Republicans and Democrats - just before voters vote.

There has been frequent speculation that Haley harbors her own presidential ambitions.

In recent months, her star had faded a bit, with Tillerson replaced by the brash Mike Pompeo and John Bolton taking over as national security advisor. 'You can have your pick, ' he said.

In a tweet, the president teased a "big announcement" Tuesday morning and referred to Haley as his "friend".

Last year, Haley blocked the appointment of former Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad as the United Nations envoy to Libya exclusively because he is Palestinian.

She was the first governor in the US of Asian descent, her parents having been born in India.

Trump nominated Haley to the United Nations job in November of 2016. "Mr. Trump said "many people" were interested in succeeding Ms. Haley and a replacement will be named in two or three weeks or maybe sooner".

Haley is the latest in a long list of senior staff members to leave the Trump administration, including former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson who was sacked in March.

I am saddened that she is leaving the administration, but so grateful for her service. "But I don't agree with the president on everything".

Ryan called her a "clear, consistent and powerful voice for America's interests".

Haley, seen in SC and Washington circles as sharp-elbowed and ambitious, had taken particular pride in keeping distance from the daily drama of the White House.

She was reelected in 2014. She also gained a reputation as a racial conciliator after leading the campaign to take down the Confederate flag at the South Carolina State House in 2015.

Sitting side-by-side in the Oval Office, Trump praised Haley as a "fantastic person" who has "done an incredible job" and said he would gladly welcome her back into his administration down the line.
