Trump says allegations against Kavanaugh 'hoax'

Donald Trump claimed Monday that the emotionally draining Brett Kavanaugh saga was a "hoax" perpetrated by "evil" Senate Democrats involving some intentionally faked claims of sexual assault that were created to derail the newest Supreme Court justice.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, in an interview with Roll Call a month ahead of Election Day, said the contentious debate about the confirmation process was driving up base enthusiasm for the 2018 midterm elections.

But not Ford, who stated in her initial written testimony, "I am here today not because I want to be".

The "hoax" remark is the furthest the president has gone in trying to discredit Ford and other accusers.

Kavanaugh, whose nomination was hit by multiple accusations of sexual misconduct against him from his past, replaces Kennedy who had announced his resignation early this year.

Senator Lisa Murkowski, the only Republican to oppose Kavanaugh, said it was time for the Senate - and Americans - to "heal" after such a divisive few weeks.

"I just congratulated him", he said.

"Everybody just smiled because they knew if it had been a Republican president and a Democratic Senate, they wouldn't have filled a vacancy", he said.

While McConnell said Kavanaugh's confirmation was a shining moment for the Republicans, some party members weren't so sure.

"We stood up to the mob", he said.

The outpouring of opinion on the political after effetcs of the Kavanaugh nomination circus continue unabated in the U.S. media.

"I think you're going to see a lot of things happen on November 6 that would not have happened before", Trump said.

Cory Booker of New Jersey, who sits on the senate's judiciary committee, was asked Sunday in Iowa by Yahoo News about the prospects of a Kavanaugh impeachment. Now that the Senate vote has taken place and the confirmation is settled, that hasn't changed.

Paula Reid, CBS News correspondent covering the Justice Department, the White House and legal affairs.

Kavanaugh is the second Supreme Court nominee of President Trump to be confirmed by the Senate.

"The way they (Democrats) behaved was absolutely atrocious.the way they conducted themselves, the way they dealt with a high-level, brilliant, going to be a great justice of the Supreme Court, the way they really tortured him and his family.it was a disgrace.it was one of the most disgraceful performances I have ever seen", the President said.

When Trump ran for the presidency in 2016, he vowed to appoint conservative judges to the Supreme Court, disclosing a list of possible candidates.

What the Democrats need to get back to are issues-such as health care, immigration, and education-on which they have substantial arguments against both the Trump administration and a Congress that has only passed one serious and substantive piece of legislation - on taxes.

With the partisan divide becoming more glaring on every issue with each passing election, Republicans feel their voters now increasinly view Democrats as opportunists who wanted to milk the Christine Blasey Ford testimony - especially after the way they whined despite the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe finding no corroborating evidence of Ford's claims against Kavanaugh from their high school years more than three decades ago.
