Turkey's Erdogan says awaiting probe results over missing Saudi journalist

"Hopefully that will sort itself out", Trump told reporters at the White House. Right now nobody knows anything about it, but there are some pretty bad stories going around. "I do not like it", he added.

Khashoggi, a contributor to the Post who has been critical of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, vanished after an appointment with Saudi officials on Tuesday at the consulate in Istanbul.

"There are many facts regarding his whereabouts that will hopefully be revealed through the ongoing investigation".

"We Saudis deserve better", he said.

Turan Kislakci, a friend of Khashoggi and the head of the Turkish-Arab Media Association, spoke to the AP on Sunday outside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

The whistleblower organization tweeted that no British newspaper had led their Monday front pages with news about Khashoggi's suspected murder despite the fact that news agencies like the Associated Press and Reuters were all reporting on the story - and suggested that the lack of interest from the United Kingdom papers was due to the fact that they "all take Saudi money". If true, this is a tragic day. "The country has stepped up its repression of critical journalists in the past year at home".

But the kingdom, which ranks 169th out of 180 on RSF´s World Press Freedom Index, has been strongly criticised over its intolerance of dissent with dozens of people arrested including intellectuals and preachers.

A Turkish official says the Saudi ambassador to Turkey has been summoned to the ministry to request Riyadh's cooperation in an investigation over journalist Jamal Khashoggi who went missing after visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last week.

"Consulate officials can not save themselves by saying that he left the building".

A demonstrator holds picture of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi during a protest in front of Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. He mentioned that there are no documents or other evidence that show the journalist departing. That team was sent "specifically for the murder", a person with knowledge of the Turkish investigation tells the Post.

What's next: Erdogan's statement today suggests he is not keen on escalating tensions with Saudi Arabia - at least for now - and that Ankara is inclined to await the official outcome of the probe into Khashoggi's disappearance before making a decisive diplomatic move.

"We could determine his entrance but not any exit. And our chief investigator is investigating everything in this matter".

Saudi officials say he left shortly afterwards, but his fiancee, who was waiting outside, said he never came out.

One Turkish official also told The Associated Press that detectives' "initial assessment" was that Jamal Khashoggi was killed at the consulate, without elaborating.

US President Donald Trump and his administration have not commented on the fate of Khashoggi but a top Senate ally of Trump warned of a "devastating" impact on the US alliance with Saudi Arabia if allegations are confirmed.

Turkey's state-run news agency, quoting police, has said 15 Saudi nationals arrived in Istanbul aboard two planes and were inside the consulate building when Khashoggi went missing.

In his statement to CNN, the Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the USA said Saudi investigators are working with Turkish authorities to determine what happened to Kashoggi.

After several of his friends were arrested, his column was cancelled by the al-Hayat newspaper and he was allegedly warned to stop tweeting, Mr Khashoggi left Saudi Arabia for the United States, from where he wrote opinion pieces for the Washington Post and continued to appear on Arab and Western TV channels.

The journalist was known for his vocal criticism of Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman's foreign policy decisions towards Qatar, Canada, the war in Yemen, as well as his crackdown against dissenting voices in Saudi Arabia.
