Venom Sets October Box Office Record With $80 Million Opening Weekend

Taking the No. 1 spot this week in spectacular fashion is "Venom" bringing in an estimated $80 million in its first weekend out. "Venom" smashed the record for an October opening, topping the $55.8 million launch of "Gravity" by 43%.

Venom also dominated the global box office with $125.2 million, setting an worldwide opening record.

While "A Star Is Born" didn't break any box office records on its own, it did help make the last three days the best weekend in October history at the box office. The film opens in Japan on November 2, however no Chinese release date has been announced.

Check back next week for more updates on Venom's box office performance!

The Tom Hardy-fronted movie, based on a popular Marvel Comics favourite, had received cold reviews from critics, winning only a 31% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Considering it was directly competing with A Star Is Born, which also took more than $40m, that's pretty damn impressive.

But despite the film's opening weekend success, Rotten Tomatoes has the movie ranked at a low 32 percent with an average rating of 4.5 out of 10.

Warner Bros.' second weekend of animated entry "Smallfoot" finished third with $14.4 million at 4,151 venues, followed by Universal's second session of Kevin Hart-Tiffany Haddish comedy "Night School" with $12.3 million at 3,019 locations.

First Man, another Oscar-bait movie, is also out - with Ryan Gosling reuniting with the La La Land director to portray Neil Armstrong.
