Research shows unionists prefer Brexit over the territorial integrity of the UK

One source told the BBC: "If Theresa May doesn't take our concerns on board, we will take the view that she is not the leader to take us through to a safe Brexit".

The party's 10 MPs have propped up the Tory government since May lost her Commons majority in the snap general election a year ago.

Barnier said customs forms could be completed in advance online and the "only visible systematic checks" would involve scanning bar codes on lorries or containers on ferries or in ports.

International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt suggested Mrs May might have to amend her Chequers plan to get a final deal, saying that "we don't know where this is going to end up".

But the DUP could abandon this deal if Brexit means new barriers between Northern Ireland and Great Britain, Newsnight's Nick Watt said.

In a statement to the Commons updating MPs following a summit of EU leaders in Salzburg last month, Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab denied the United Kingdom would stay in the customs union indefinitely, and said the government would "press our case" for an outcome that will "preserve the integrity of the UK".

In order to make progress on the UK's withdrawal agreement at a European Council summit next week, Brussels and London must agree plans for a "backstop" to maintain the status quo along the Irish land border, with trade flowing freely between the Republic of Ireland and the north.

Sources in the party - whose 10 MPs are propping up the PM in power - have warned it would be "unacceptable" for Northern Ireland and mainland Britain to be "treated differently".

"An agreement is within reach for October 17, next Wednesday, if we succeed to the end of this negotiation now", Barnier said in a speech to business leaders at the European Parliament.

The European Union is doing all it can to ensure checks on goods moving across Northern Ireland's borders would be made "in the least intrusive way possible", for example on ferries, at ports or in factories of origin, he said.

The Labour leader is expected to whip his MPs to vote against the Brexit deal when it comes to Commons, whatever the shape of the agreement as it is unlikely to meet with the party's "six tests".

Former Brexit minister Steve Baker said on Tuesday that as many as 40 hardcore Tory Brexiteers will defy the party whip should they be forced to vote in favour of the Chequers plan.

Following the College of Commissioners meeting, two commissioners stressed the importance of continued UK/EU co-operation on security after Brexit. It says it will not tolerate the EU's suggestion of Northern Ireland staying in line with European Union customs rules to enable trade to flow freely across the border.
