Sony patent points towards backwards compatibility on PlayStation 5

Sony patent points towards backwards compatibility on PlayStation 5

Yoshida reportedly declined to confirm whether or not the next PlayStation console will be called the "PlayStation 5," which seems like the natural choice.

Cloud gaming is still in its infancy at present, with Sony having its own service in the form of PlayStation Now.

It's even more certain now that the news has come from the top.

Speaking during an interview with the Financial Times (via GI.biz), Yoshida-san didn't actually utter the words "PS5", but made it clear the format holder is looking to release a next-generation console.

Sony's PlayStation 4 has been around for five years now, which means it's starting to get a little long in the tooth.

The PlayStation 9, coming in 2078, was first advertised as a goof by Sony in an ad campaign for the PlayStation 2.

It's most likely that the former is true, however, sources apparently "in the know" told Financial Times that the next PlayStation might "represent a major departure from the PS4, and that the fundamental architecture was similar". Rival Microsoft recently announced it would begin publicly testing Project xCloud, a global game streaming technology, in 2019.

That makes sense if streaming is to be the focus, since the whole point is that the device you play the game on doesn't have to be that powerful.

Nonetheless, while the dominance of the console-as-a-platform may be fading, Sony appears to believe there's enough demand to merit at least one more generation. The PlayStation 5, to be specific.

Sony has been in the lead for years when it comes to console sales. Neither outright replaced the base console - instead, they offered better graphics and performance for the same games.
