Florida governor expresses his concerns over Hurricane Michael

Residents of Florida Panhandle to central Georgia in the USA have heaved a sigh of relieve as Hurricane Michael downgraded early Thursday to a tropical storm after leaving a trail of destruction including at least two deaths. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Chassahowitzka to Anna Maria Island Florida, including Tampa Bay, the Mississippi/Alabama border to the Mouth of the Pearl River and from Fernandina Beach, Florida to South Santee River, South Carolina. Storms with cloud top temperatures that cold have the capability to produce heavy rainfall. "It will be life-threatening and extremely unsafe". Persons located within these areas should take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other risky conditions.

"Where that becomes a factor is with the evacuation of some of the local populations", he said. The warning is issued just prior to when the strongest winds of the eyewall are expected to impact an area. Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion.

The unexpected brute that quickly sprang from a weekend tropical depression grew swiftly, rising in days to a catastrophic storm. In addition, a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect from the Alabama/Florida border to the Mississippi/Alabama border and for Suwanee River, Florida to Chassahowitzka, Florida.

Michael is shaking up the upcoming election in the battleground state of Florida.

The speed of the storm - Michael was moving north 12 mph - gave many people a dwindling number of hours to prepare or flee before being caught up in damaging wind and rain. A northward motion is expected through tonight, followed by a northeastward motion on Wednesday and Thursday.

Cameras outside the International Space Station captured video of Michael as the storm continued churning over the Gulf of Mexico.

There will be no shelters open in Wakulla County, the sheriff's office warned on Facebook, because they are rated safe only for hurricanes with top sustained winds below 111 miles per hour (178 kph).

On Oct. 8, the MODIS or Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer instrument that also flies aboard NASA's Aqua satellite captured a visible image of Hurricane Michael when it was a Category 1 hurricane near the western tip of Cuba.

Forecasters say Michael was upgraded to a Category 2 storm Tuesday morning, and it could make landfall as a Category 3. It is expected to weaken as it moves up into the southeastern United States. The minimum central pressure recently measured by the reconnaissance aircraft was 947 mb (27.97 inches).

Pictures and video from Mexico Beach, a community of about 1,000 people where Michael made landfall around 1:00 pm Eastern time, showed scenes of devastation, with houses floating in flooded streets, some ripped from their foundations and missing roofs.

King tides, the highest tides of the year, also could be a factor in water levels and they will be monitored.

But Brad Kieserman of the American Red Cross said Wednesday that as many as 320,000 people on Florida's Gulf Coast had disregarded mandatory or voluntary evacuation notices.

Joanne Palazzi, 77, told the paper it was going to be her first time riding out a storm in her mobile home. Hurricane conditions are possible within the hurricane watch area by Wednesday.

Based on its internal barometric pressure, Michael was the third most powerful hurricane to hit the USA mainland, behind the unnamed Labor Day storm of 1935 and Camille in 1969.
