Gas prices set to rise across PNW because of Canadian pipeline rupture

A gas pipeline explosion that led to the evacuation of 100 people on Tuesday is now forcing the residents of British Columbia and the state of Washington to cut their gas consumption as the region faces a shortage until the pipeline is repaired.

FortisBC says the Enbridge pipeline feeds its system province-wide and that it expects to see a decrease in the flow of gas and perhaps even a complete loss of service from the pipeline.

GasBuddy claims that the duration of the price spike will depend on how long the Enbridge pipeline remains out of service, but it could be felt for the next week or two. "Motorists are urged to only buy what fuel they need to limit the scope of the price increases".

The University of Victoria said Fortis B.C. has requested that it restrict its use of natural gas.

Enbridge spokesperson Michael Barnes says a full investigation into what caused the rupture is underway and the company is working with nearby communities to maintain public safety.

The institution sent an email to students last night warning that "building heating will be very limited on the north side of BCIT Burnaby Campus".

The pipeline is part of the T-South system, stretching over 1,000 kilometres from Chetwynd, B.C., to the USA border, which is why it impacts gas distribution across the province and into Washington.

Up to 700,000 natural gas customers in northern B.C., the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island could be directly affected by a potential natural gas shortage, a spokesman for Fortis BC said in Vancouver on Wednesday. While the ruptured pipeline carries natural gas, chances are that anti-pipeline activists will waste no time in using the incident in their case against pipeline. "It's one of the ways of addressing the high cost of owning a home in Victoria".

Investigators are still searching for a cause of the blast just outside Prince George.

The province's Ministry of Environment later confirmed the incident involved a 900 PSI gas line operated by Enbridge.

It damaged the company's primary natural gas pipeline linking the Fort Nelson area to Vancouver and south to another 750,000 customers in the northwest United States.
